Protecting Your Peace, Trauma Responses, Emotional Walls & Healthy Relationships

Are you actually healing, or are you building walls and calling it growth?

At some point, protecting your peace became the advice everyone needed. Set boundaries. Cut people off. Stop explaining yourself. Choose yourself.

And sometimes, that's exactly what you need to do.

But what happens when protecting your peace becomes an excuse to avoid difficult conversations? When past relationship hurt starts affecting people who never caused it? Or when we've become so focused on avoiding unhealthy relationships that we stop allowing ourselves to build healthy ones?

In this episode of Mutually Unhinged, Lauren and Vicky unpack the uncomfortable side of healing, emotional growth, and relationship boundaries. We're asking whether we're genuinely becoming healthier versions of ourselves...or whether some of our old patterns have simply taken on more socially acceptable names.

We're talking about the difference between protecting your peace and pushing people away, why difficult conversations can feel like too much work, and how to recognize when setting boundaries turns into shutting people out.

We'll also explore how past relationship trauma can change the way we love. Have you ever punished a new partner or friend for something someone else did to you? Do you find yourself expecting the worst, keeping people at a distance, or assuming that vulnerability will eventually backfire?

Because understanding where your behavior comes from matters. But understanding your behavior isn't the same as excusing its impact.

We'll get into trauma responses versus emotional intelligence, why having a valid reason for your actions doesn't always mean you handled a situation well, and how you can acknowledge your own hurt while still taking responsibility for hurting someone else.

And finally, we're questioning a phrase we've all heard: “I've outgrown them.”

Sometimes we genuinely outgrow relationships. Sometimes people no longer align with our values, and walking away is the healthiest decision. But sometimes, we stop putting effort into relationships because communication feels uncomfortable, compromise feels exhausting, or accountability requires us to look at ourselves.

So how do you know the difference?

This conversation isn't about abandoning your boundaries or forcing yourself to maintain every relationship. It's about learning to recognize the difference between healthy distance and emotional avoidance, between growth and isolation, and between healing from your past and allowing your past to dictate your future.

Because the goal isn't to become someone who never gets hurt again.

It's to become someone who can experience hurt without automatically building a wall around every part of their life.

In this episode, we're unpacking:

  • Protecting your peace versus pushing people away
  • Setting healthy boundaries without shutting people out
  • Avoiding difficult conversations and emotional discomfort
  • How past relationship trauma affects new relationships
  • Punishing new people for what previous people did
  • Trauma responses, emotional intelligence, and personal accountability
  • Why a valid reason doesn't erase the impact of your actions
  • Knowing when you've genuinely outgrown a friendship
  • Emotional avoidance disguised as healing or personal growth
  • How to build healthier relationships without abandoning yourself
